About

Welcome to my little space on the web. Come in, wipe your feet. Make yourself at home. Fancy a cup of tea? Coffee? Take a look around the place. If you need me I'll be on the contact page, metaphorically speaking.

Some examples of my work can be found in the portfolio section. If you are interested in some of my e-learning or design work then take a look at my design portfolio.

What can I do for you?

Illustration

The bulk of my illustration work is generally geared towards children’s literature and picture books. However, I have had extensive experience producing content for various e-learning products (including the Edexcel BTEC National onscreen assessments), business to business presentations, internal communications (including info-graphics and newsletters) and for technical and diagrammatic purposes.

My style is quite adaptive. The majority of my work tends to be hand-drawn but I do enjoy breaking out Illustrator from time to time.

eLearning

Alongside illustrating and animating for e-learning products, I have also project manage and built eLearning products. The All of the work displayed in the eLearning section was built using Flash.

Graphics

Over the years I have been asked to produce technical drawings, application user interfaces and graphics for various products. I have some typesetting experience, specialising in creating Word templates for professional products.

Striker Mikey Meets His Match

Striker Mikey Meets His Match by Alex Eeles and published by AuthrHouse UK. Alex and I met through a mutual friend in 2015. Alex was keen to publish a personal project of his and was looking for an illustrator. We both had busy day jobs but we keen to work on this project in our spare time. After some time out, the book was finished in 2018 and is now available at Amazon UK.

Grandma!

Grandma is a character invented by my second child. They used to sit there and makeup incredible adventures about what they and Grandma used to get up to. As a tribute, I decided to put together a picture story book for them. Still a work in progress!

Spaceship Cut-away

An image taken from my personal collection. Following on from my "Mouse" boat illustration, I decided this time to focus on a spaceship. It seemed obvious to me at the time that the mice should still be involved!

Beyond Knowledge Assessment

Details

Beyond Knowledge Assessment or BKA is a programme of work investigating novel ways of assessing performance and skills on screen reaching beyond traditional knowledge-based tests.

This prototype measured students’ ability to apply different geographical skills using a realistic task. I worked with Geography experts to carefully design the task and associated resources to ensure their construct validity. The geography prototype did not feature any traditional onscreen question mechanisms, instead students need to conduct research using the interactive tools and media available to them to solve a real world problem.

As part of the internal communications plan at Pearson, I also developed a promotional video outlining the projects features.

Assist-Me

European Union research project

ASSIST-ME is a high level research project with a societal impact that will investigate formative and summative assessment methods to support and to improve inquiry-based approaches in European science, technology and mathematics (STM) education.

As the onscreen partner in this project we have designed and developed onscreen assessment platforms and materials for the three assessment approaches deemed suitable for competences-based assessment: investigation and problem solving; application of knowledge and simulation/modelling, namely materials at upper primary and lower secondary levels, and targeting Science, Maths and Design ∓ Technology.

Designs include a "portal" aimed at secondary students, a "portal" aimed exclusively at primary and a teacher admin panel to manage both. ASSIST-ME stands for Assess Inquiry in Science, Technology and Mathematics Education. To learn more about the Assist-Me project, go to the University of Copenhagen Assist-Me page at http://assistme.ku.dk/

Set it Right

Money saving gas and electricity advice

The idea developed from a conversation I had with the head of Sustainable Procurement at Metropolitan Housing Partnership. He wanted a way of offering accessible advice to our residents and customers focusing specifically on how to save money on gas and electrical bills. I came up with the idea of a module to sit on the website, split into three sections, saving money on gas bills, on electricity bills and on eco-technologies. I designed and developed the entire module, creating all of the assets and illustrations while my colleague provided the content. He was extremely happy with the product which still sits on the new Metropolitan website.

"Tax Game" Prototype

Game-based learning module

This request came directly from a lawyer working for LexisNexis. He had a great idea for a learning "game" which he wanted to present. An amazingly committed individual and extremely confident in the idea, he shot six videos for the prototype in his own time, using friends. I designed and built the prototype. The product was well received but the business couldn't see a way of licensing or selling the product to it's client base so the project was canned at prototype level.
